Restoration, Renovation and Refinishing of Antique Furniture
Furnishing a house or apartment, the correct placement of elements is a natural and non-alternative way to decorate the interior. A person himself cannot imagine his/her existence without these objects, whether it is a chair, a table or a bed. However, each thing has its own service life, over time it is getting old. For some, it is easier to throw away an old chest of drawers, a sofa that got worn out and lost its appearance, or, simply, gone out of fashion. Some believe that the best solution would be giving the beloved wooden or soft furniture a second life, meaning - furniture restoration.
Experts divide the process of returning the former beauty of different elements into two main types: partial (touch up) and full restoration. Any work begins with the assessment of the object, its visual inspection. When restoring, you should adhere to certain rules:
-If mold or rot is detected, it is necessary to assess the condition of the wood, whether it is possible to clean and treat it with special compounds or whether it has completely rotted.
- As a result of changes in temperatures, high humidity, and human activity, cracks may appear on the surface. In this case, the damaged areas are either completely removed or treated and masked.
- After removing the varnish, it is recommended to disinfect the wood or other material to prevent bugs and mold.
- If there are stains on the surface that cannot be removed by standard methods, then you will have to bleach the wood.
After the proper examination, the next step is to remove the main problem (mold, rotten parts or scratches). For example, there is an antique dining table or modern wooden table with scratches and dents. First we remove the defective parts, sometimes we even replace them (if it is rotten to the core), then our craftsman sands down the old finish completely and treats the wood with a product to protect the wood from small unseen bugs. Once the wood is strong and beautiful again we stain it and apply a protective polish. This final stage takes a lot of time as several layers have to be coated and each layer has to dry very well. The quantity of layers depends on the furniture. The wood restoration/refinishing process requires not only the working experience but also knowledge of wood types and how it behaves with certain products.
Refinishing a table, dresser or any other wooden furniture returns not only the brand new look of it but also can become a part of new design ideas.
But if cabinets, shelves, cabinets, tables, chests of drawers retain their appearance and functionality for a long time during normal use, then upholstered furniture is much more sensitive to international influences, since its design contains foam rubber or other filler and upholstery fabric. The filler has the main thing to sag and crumble, and the fabric wears out. As a result, sofas, armchairs, chairs lose their appearance, become uncomfortable.
You can buy new furniture, throwing away the old one. Or you can give the old, but beloved and familiar one another chance at life. This chance is reupholstery.
